Mireia Esplugas, MD, EBHS

My name is Mireia Esplugas, MD. I have been a Spanish Orthopedics Hand Surgeon since 1996 and obtained my European Board of Hand Surgery (EBHS) in 2006. In my first years of practice, I dealt to improve my Hand Surgery Skills to help my patients. Although I always tried to technically do my best, I was not completely satisfied with my clinical outcomes. Then, in 2010, I had the opportunity to meet and work with an awesome team of Hand Surgeons who opened my mind. I met Dr. Marc Garcia-Elias (Barcelona), Dr. Elizabet Hagert (Stockholm), and Dr. Amy Moore (Stanford). I have been working with them for more than 10 years in many cadaveric studies in the lab where I have learned that a good Hand Surgery practice needs loving and understanding of Basic Sciences (anatomy, biomechanics, and physiology) and needs loving and understanding of Hand Therapy. Our team has published many articles in renowned Hand Surgery and Hand Therapy journals and books. We were awarded The Kaplan Award for Excellence in Anatomy in 2014 and have been invited to many international congresses and conferences to share our studies. Nowadays, I work in Private practice at the Kaplan Hand Institute of Barcelona since 2018 and continue to regularly attend the Biomechanical lab at the Barcelona Autonoma University. I am also a Faculty at the FESSH Academy and at the International Wrist Arthroscopy Society (IWAS and I am the 2023-2024 President of the European Wrist Arthroscopy Society (EWAS).
I am honored to be with all of you in this ASHT 2023 Annual Meeting! Thanks for inviting me to keep learning from all of you!
